The Georgia Advanced Computing Resource Center (GACRC) now requires researchers using the GACRC’s resources for the first time to complete an introductory training session. The training sessions help researchers understand how to use the computational and storage resources available through the GACRC. Training is available for individual researchers and research groups on an ad hoc basis and through scheduled training sessions. Once new GACRC accounts are established, additional information about training opportunities is shared with
researchers. Training opportunities are also posted on the GACRC’s website.

The Office of Academic Planning has launched the new UGA Elements professional profile system.

The automated system replaces the Faculty Activity Repository and will become the primary source of data regarding the research, scholarship, service, awards and honors of UGA faculty. All UGA faculty will be required to use the system to facilitate the annual performance evaluation process for 2016 and beyond.

All UGA faculty members have a profile in UGA Elements, with information such as education, official appointments, grants and courses taught automatically integrated from campus databases. Articles from most scholarly journals will be imported upon publication, although faculty members will be responsible for making sure the data synchronizes when prompted by an email alert. Faculty members may need to manually input some information, such as community service and awards from outside the university.

Each unit has named an administrative liaison for the project who will coordinate training opportunities for UGA Elements as well as its timetable for implementation. For questions, please contact your unit’s administrative liaison. A list is available at elements.uga.edu.

To sign in the UGA Elements system or access training materials using your MyID, go to elements.uga.edu.

A new online research supply ordering system for Central Research Stores (CRS), called iLabsolutions, went live this week.

The iLabs Product Core module will be the primary platform for UGA faculty and staff to order chemicals and lab supplies from CRS, a unit of the Office of Research Support Services.  The transition to iLabs was prompted by an aging ordering system that was not compatible with most web browsers and lacked security features that are common on current computer systems.

The ordering process has several noticeable enhancements:

  • In-stock items will be visible during the customer order process
  • Catalog items from major scientific vendors are already loaded for easy access to product listings
  • Only your UGA MyID and password will be required to access the new system
  • Electronic invoicing for all orders

Since 2008, compliance with the NIH public access policy has been a statutory requirement and a term and condition of all grants, cooperative agreements and contracts. A fundamental premise of NIH’s public access policy is that awardees are responsible for ensuring that papers directly resulting from their funding award are made accessible to the public on PubMed Central. When awardees list a paper in the progress report publication list of an RPPR or a renewal application, they are claiming that the publication directly arises from that award and the awardee is responsible for the public access compliance of the listed publications. This notice clarifies which papers directly arise from institutional training, career development, and related awards to reduce the burden of unnecessary reporting.

As top tier subscribers to Royal Society of Chemistry journals, UGA Libraries are pleased to support Open Access publishing for our faculty and students who have an accepted manuscript in an RSC journal, for free. This new program is called Gold for Gold.

The author of an accepted paper can elect to publish it Open Access,  thus reaching a wider audience. With free and immediate access, Open Access articles receive higher visibility and citation rates than publications behind pay walls. The RSC Gold for Gold program waives author page charges typically associated with publishing Open Access that most academic publishers offer.

There is a limited number of vouchers, so please ask for details right away if you have an accepted RSC manuscript and wish to maximize readership of your article!

Please contact UGA Gold for Gold Representative: Mariann Burright, mariann@uga.edu and visit the Gold For Gold FAQ for details: https://www.rsc.org/Publishing/librarians/GoldforGold.asp

Announcements Compliance, Integrity & Safety

The offices overseeing research safety and environmental safety at UGA have reorganized to better assure compliance with UGA, local, state, and national research and environmental safety regulations. These offices provide guidance to UGA faculty, staff and students with the goal of protecting safety, health and the environment and, wherever possible, reducing regulatory burden.

Chemical & Laboratory Safety, Radiation Safety and Special Hazards Safety now comprise the new Office of Research Safety (ORS), a unit of the Office of Research Integrity and Safety (ORIS). The three units, previously part of the Environmental Safety Division (ESD), report to Zeke Barrera, director of the ORS. They have temporarily relocated to the building known as the Electronics Shop, located behind Hardman Hall, on South Campus. Office of Research Safety reports to Chris King, associate vice president for research compliance/OVPR.

A new Research Safety website https://research.uga.edu/safety provides clear organization of information for researchers, staff and faculty looking for policies, guidelines, forms and tools related to chemical and laboratory safety, radiation safety and special hazards.

Environmental Compliance, Environmental Health & Food Safety, and Industrial Hygiene continue to report to John McCollum, associate vice president of Environmental Safety Division, Finance & Administration. The three environmental safety offices are located in the ESD building on Riverbend Road. All forms, policies and procedures related to those offices remain on the ESD website https://esd.uga.edu/

The reorganization will enable UGA to better assist researchers and students through cross-training of staff within the research safety and the environmental safety offices, and through better communication with researchers about compliance requirements. Office of Research Safety and Environmental Safety Division will continue to work closely together.

A new Research Integrity & Safety Support Services https://research.uga.edu/compliance-training/ includes mandatory training and additional training opportunities for UGA researchers, staff and students who work with laboratory chemicals, radioactive materials and lasers. It also includes training for those using respirators; personal protective equipment (PPE), fire extinguisher and fire safety training, and hazardous material shipping information and resources.
