NAGPRA requires institutions to assess their holdings for eligible materials, inventory any that are discovered, conduct research into the origin and acquisition history of those materials, and consult with Native American Tribes and/or Native Hawaiian Organizations to determine affiliation. Institutions maintain transparency throughout this process by submitting formal progress notifications to the National NAGPRA Program at defined stages for publication in the Federal Register.
