Leading Georgia’s E-Mobility Innovation: Informing Research and Decision-Making

Leading Georgia’s E-Mobility Innovation: Informing Research and Decision-Making

New Frontiers Track

An overall goal of this project is to establish UGA as a testbed for Electric Vehicle (EV) implementation that informs both academic and applied research and outreach while also furthering EV adoption and infrastructure across campus. This project therefore includes partners from across campus, bringing together academic researchers (Terry College of Business and College of Engineering), public service professionals (Carl Vinson Institute of Government), and UGA facility and sustainability professionals (Facilities Management Division and Office of Sustainability). We are at the cusp of a tremendous social transition, and the state of Georgia is leading the way as it becomes a leader in EV and battery production. This project will identify key data sources and establish foundational metrics from which to develop additional interdisciplinary research questions such as how to use data informatics to improve driver charging behavior, how to model energy costs and savings in novel ways, how to account for carbon emission reductions, how to address emerging safety and cybersecurity issues, and how to incorporate charging into user-friendly planning and design. Because many state agencies and local governments in Georgia will also be transitioning to EVs, this project has strong potential to generate methodologies, best practices, and lessons learned to guide decision-making across the state, resulting in broader impact. It will also develop content and opportunities for students participating in the College of Engineering’s E-Mobility Certificate and at the Terry College of Business to acquire skills and competencies in the economic analyses supporting electric mobility and the transition to clean energy technologies.
