September 2015 Innovation Gateway Highlights

  • Michael Hamrick and Stephen Rosenberg of Athens-based Perfect Pitch Concepts discussed the fundamentals of online marketing at the monthly Innovation Gateway Lunch & Learn.
  • Julie DeSa Lorenz, CEO of On-Line Instrument Systems, Inc. (OLIS), shared 10 best practices for building a successful technology-based startup company at the monthly Innovation Gateway Startup Stories seminar series.
  • Four different technologies were licensed non-exclusively to Kerafast, a life sciences company that facilitates the availability of research materials.
  • InfraredRX, a UGA startup company developing technology to benefit patients with peripheral artery disease, optioned patent rights for new product development.
  • The Whiddon pecan variety developed by Darrell Sparks, department of horticulture, was non-exclusively licensed to two Georgia nurseries.
  • New UGA startup incubator company BiotecEra attended the National Science Foundation’s “Beat the Odds” startup boot camp and conference in Washington, DC.
  • Innovation Gateway participated in the UGA Pecan Research and Breeding Field Day in South Georgia, led by Patrick Conner and Darrell Sparks, department of horticulture. The event was attended by many pecan growers and several licensees and researchers.
  • Innovation Gateway and leadership from the College of Engineering met with representatives from China to discuss possible UGA-China research collaborations.
  • Innovation Gateway hosted David Provence, an IP patent attorney from Mueting, Raasch & Gebhardt. David updated the Gateway team on recent patent law changes and also visited with UGA researchers, including Michael and Rebecca Terns, C.J Tsai, and Debra Mohnen, to discuss patent activities on their inventions.
  • Innovation Gateway and Scott NeSmith, department of horticulture, met with two representatives of a European-based company interested in UGA-developed blueberry cultivars for Europe. Additionally, one blueberry cultivar developed by Scott Nesmith was licensed non-exclusively to a Georgia company, and multiple blueberry selections were optioned for growth trials.
  • Innovation Gateway met with a visiting professor from Morocco to discuss blueberry cultivars developed by UGA.
  • Innovation Gateway signed a testing agreement with a golf course in Singapore interested in testing TifEagle bermudagrass, developed by Wayne Hanna, department of crop and soil sciences.
  • Innovation Gateway, along with John Ruter, department of horticulture, met with several representatives from an ornamental horticulture nursery to discuss potential licensing and trials for ornamentals.
  • Innovation Gateway participated in the UGA/Merial Research Showcase focused on exploring ways to enhance collaborations between the two groups.
