March 2015 Innovation Gateway Highlights

  • Phase I Georgia Research Alliance (GRA) seed funding awarded to UGA startup company BiotecEra, founded by Yajun Yan, College of Engineering.
  • Completed an exclusive license agreement for cybersecurity technology developed by Roberto Perdisci’s research team in the computer science department.
  • Executed an exclusive license agreement with a startup company for technology from the laboratory of Shanta Dhar, department of chemistry.
  • Completed three international licenses for turfgrass in Japan and Costa Rica.
  • Joe Grubbs of MHG|Meredian spoke at the Startup Stories seminar series on the use of canola oil as an energy source for bioplastics production.
  • Completed multiple license agreements for blueberry varieties created by Scott NeSmith in the department of horticulture.
  • Executed an exclusive license agreement for a wheat variety created by Jerry Johnson, department of crop and soil sciences.
  • Two Gateway team members attended the International Poultry Production and Processing Expo to meet with current and potential licensee companies about UGA animal health technologies.
  • Amended an exclusive license agreement for technology developed by Michael Pierce of UGA’s Complex Carbohydrate Research Center.
  • Licensing team members presented information on the licensing program to researchers in the department of pharmaceutical and biomedical sciences.
  • Several members of the Gateway team participated in a seminar on IP ownership policies and increasing disclosure rates.
  • Hosted Georgia BIO President and CEO Russell Allen discussing the life sciences industry in Georgia as a part of the Lunch and Learn series.
  • Cheryl Junker, a member of the Gateway licensing team, co-authored an article on issues important in inventorship determination and joint patent ownership.
  • Coordinated with Kerafast to establish the Kerafast Fellow’s Program to enhance efforts to make unique research tools developed at UGA available to the research community.
  • Two Gateway team members attended the Georgia Agribusiness Council (GAC) Annual Business Meeting and Dinner, as well as the GAC State Legislative Breakfast.
