One UGA professor’s research has caught the aesthetic attention of Nature, one of the world’s most prestigious scientific journals.
Dan Johnson, assistant professor of tree physiology and forest ecology in the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, has spent 20 years researching the microscopic tissues that help tree seedlings grow. Using high-powered X-rays at the University of Idaho and University of California-Berkeley, Johnson has been able to witness exactly what takes place inside a plant seedling. The photographic results from these X-rays, which were featured as one of the best science images of August 2020 in Nature, could change how researchers study the first weeks of a tree’s life.
