UGA’s Marshall Shepherd featured as a TED Talk

Marshall Shepherd

Wednesday marked a moment in history for TEDxUGA. Marshall Shepherd, a University of Georgia faculty presenter from TEDxUGA 2018: Connect, was the featured talk on TED.com. In his talk, “3 kinds of bias that shape your worldview,” Shepherd explains how confirmation bias, the Dunning-Kruger effect and cognitive dissonance impact what we think we know, and shares ideas for how we can replace them with something much more powerful: knowledge.

Shepherd is the Georgia Athletic Association Distinguished Professor of Geography and Atmospheric Sciences. He is the director of the Atmospheric Sciences Program and a professor and associate department head in the Department of Geography. As a leading international expert in weather and climate, Shepherd has received many honors and awards including the 2018 HMS Helmut Landsberg Award and has appeared on national media platforms like CNN and “The Today Show.”

He also hosted “Weather Geeks,” a pioneering science talk show on The Weather Channel. Shepherd currently chairs the NASA Earth Science Committee and advises key leaders at NASA, the White House, Congress, Department of Defense, and officials from foreign countries.
