Elementary schoolers learned all about the study of people at World Anthropology Day on Feb. 20 at the University of Georgia’s Laboratory of Archaeology. The day is always on the third Thursday of February “for anthropologists to celebrate and participate in their discipline with the public around them,” according to the American Anthropological Association.

UGA’s Department of Anthropology joined the many colleges and universities, businesses and K-12 schools around the world that celebrated the discipline.

“We wanted to expose students to what anthropology is, so they could learn to appreciate the past,” said Amanda Roberts Thompson, operations director of the Laboratory of Archaeology. “We want students to know what’s out there and that archaeology isn’t all about digging.”
