Founded in 1968, the UGA Skidaway Institute of Oceanography is a multidisciplinary research and training institution located on Skidaway Island near Savannah. Skidaway’s 700-acre campus of forests and meadows is surrounded by coastal estuaries and salt marshes that frequently play a role in the institute’s research. Scientists conduct basic research across a broad range of subdisciplines, covering local economic and environmental issues as well as global processes and phenomena using state-of-the-art research laboratories and instrumentation and the 92-foot Research Vessel Savannah.
