Spring cleaning isn’t just for your house.
Now through July, UGA Green Labs is hosting the annual Freezer Challenge, a contest encouraging researchers to clean out and maintain ultra-low cold storage units.
The Freezer Challenge is an international initiative backed by several sustainability organizations, promoting cold storage efficiency and energy savings.
Green Labs Program Manager Star Scott and her team instruct labs on campus about simple steps to properly clean their freezers, such as throwing out old samples, scraping ice, and cleaning filters.
Last year, 47 UGA labs participated and saved a total of 169,287 kWh of energy per year. That’s equivalent to the energy used to power 15 homes for a year.
By participating in the freezer challenge, UGA researchers also earn a chance to win a brand new high-efficiency ultra-cold freezer worth $15,000 courtesy of Utility and Energy Management.
