During the last 40 years, the UGA Trial Gardens has blossomed into one of the nation’s top plant breeding facilities and research resources for plant sciences. From industry partners and researchers to students and the general public, the unique gardens provide a wide range of valuable assets.
Created in 1982 by Allan Armitage and Michael Dirr, both professors of horticulture in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, the primary functions of the gardens have always been research, teaching and new crop introduction. Since it was founded, the gardens have been the breeding ground for several successful plant varieties that stemmed from partnerships with green-industry companies across the globe.
