UGA NSF CAREER Proposal Development Program<\/h3>\n

The Office of Strategic Research Development (OSRD) is hosting a new six-part CAREER Proposal Development Program, created and conducted in partnership with the Engineering Education Transformations Institute (EETI). The program is designed to guide the support faculty through the complete process of developing a CAREER proposal. It is open to all faculty eligible to apply for a CAREER award, whether submitting for the first, second, or final time. By July, all participants who complete the program should have a highly competitive proposal ready for submission.<\/p>\n

Focus:<\/strong> Overview of the NSF CAREER program and UGA\u2019s NSF CAREER Proposal Development Program.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]\n

SESSION 1: The NSF CAREER Proposal as a Professional Development Plan<\/strong><\/h4>\n

When:<\/strong> Friday, February 20, 3:00-4:30pm<\/p>\n

Format: <\/strong>Presentation followed by Q&A<\/p>\n

Presenter: <\/strong>Jake Maas, Director of OSRD<\/em>, standing in for Julie Martin, Engineering Education Transformations Institute Director, former NSF program director, 2009 CAREER awardee<\/em><\/p>\n

Focus: <\/strong>Introduces participants to the NSF CAREER program as a career development plan which lays the foundation for the PI\u2019s long-term career vision. Introduces the concept of PI\u2019s unique qualifications and integration of the research and education components. Provides tips for writing a 1-page summary.<\/p>\n

SESSION 2: Project Summary Peer Review & Strategic Timeline Development<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Format: <\/strong>Presentation, Writing Groups, Q&A<\/p>\n

Presenter: <\/strong>Becky Martini, Associate Professor of English and Writing Center Director<\/em>; Jake Maas, Director of OSRD<\/em><\/p>\n

Focus: <\/strong>How to provide and receive constructive critiques. Peer review of 1-page summary draft. Discussion of NSF CAREER Timeline and Checklist. How to reach and talk to an NSF Program Officer.<\/p>\n

Homework: <\/strong>Discuss your 1-page summary with cognizant NSF program officer(s<\/u><\/em>)<\/u><\/em>.<\/em>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]\n

SESSION 3: <\/strong>Crafting a Meaningful Education Plan with Broader Impacts<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Fanning Institute for Leadership Development<\/em>.<\/p>\n

SESSION 4: <\/strong>How to Effectively Pitch Your Future Career to NSF<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Presenters: <\/strong>John Brocato, Technical Communications Senior Lecturer, School of Chemical, Materials, and Biomedical Engineering<\/em>; Jake Maas, Director of OSRD<\/em><\/p>\n

Focus:<\/strong> Strategies to write effective and engaging background\/motivation sections appropriate for NSF audiences and craft compelling research stories through writing style, structure, and coherence.<\/p>\n

Homework:<\/strong> Complete your \u201c80% draft\u201d Project Description<\/u>.<\/em>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]\n

SESSION 5: <\/strong>Expert Review and Feedback<\/strong><\/h4>\n

When: <\/strong>Asynchronous; \u201c80% drafts\u201d of Project Summary and Project Description due Monday, June 8<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Where: Online\/Zoom<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Reviewers: <\/strong>Past CAREER awardees<\/p>\n

Focus<\/strong>: Share your complete draft with your assigned expert reviewer. Optional<\/strong> 30-min consultation.<\/p>\n

Homework:<\/strong> Develop all ancillary documents in consultation with your grants coordinator, DLSA, or SPA<\/u>.<\/em>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]\n

SESSION 6: <\/strong>OSRD Feedback on and Editing of Final Drafts<\/strong><\/h4>\n

When: <\/strong>Asynchronous; final drafts of Project Summary and Project Description due Monday, June 29<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Where:<\/strong> Online\/Zoom<\/p>\n

Reviewers: <\/strong>OSRD and other RD staff as needed<\/p>\n

Focus<\/strong>: Once expert review feedback has been incorporated, OSRD will provide written feedback and editing to fine-tune project description and project summary. Optional 30-minute PI meetings.<\/p>\n
