Research Scientists exhibit a degree of independence beyond that of other research staff and students.<\/p>\n<h2>Appointment of Research Scientists<\/h2>\n<p>The Office of Research works with the Office of Faculty Affairs to administer the <a href=\"https:\/\/policy.uga.edu\/policies\/#\/programs\/BJMDDkY8a?bc=true&amp;bcCurrent=008%20-%20Guidelines%20for%20Appointment%20and%20Promotion%20of%20Research%20Scientists&amp;bcGroup=Appointment%20%26%20Promotion&amp;bcItemType=programs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">guidelines for the appointments and promotions of Research Scientists.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The procedures to appoint a research scientist follow the regular <a href=\"https:\/\/provost.uga.edu\/faculty-affairs\/faculty-hiring-position-management\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">faculty appointment process<\/a> <strong>managed by the Office of Faculty Affairs<\/strong> with the following exceptions:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Include the Statement of Roles and Responsibilities and Unit Definition of Privileges in the offer letter in addition to the information required in the Office of Faculty Affairs\u2019 non-tenure track faculty offer letter template.\u00a0 (<span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>Important<\/strong><\/span> &#8211; Use the Office of Faculty Affairs&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/provost.uga.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/research-scientist-offer-letter-template.docx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">template of alternate paragraphs for a Research Scientist appointment<\/a> <em><strong>in conjunction with the<\/strong><\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/provost.uga.edu\/faculty-affairs\/faculty-hiring-position-management\/offer-letters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Office of Faculty Affairs&#8217; faculty offer letter template<\/a>.)<\/li>\n<li>The faculty vote that was taken on the appointment of the candidate should be included in the hiring proposal in UGAJobs.\u00a0 # Yes\/# No\/# Abstain<\/li>\n<li>In the UGAJobs system, Human Resources will route the hiring proposal for the successful candidate through the Office of Research for review and approval.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Promotion of Research Scientists<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Office of Research conducts an annual review of Research Scientist promotion requests from campus units.<\/li>\n<li>Generally, in a given year, promotion-related activities should occur within a time frame appropriate for faculty on academic-year schedules to complete the process and for the Office of Faculty Affairs\/Provost and President to receive the promotion recommendations from Office of Research by a date in January (determined annually by the Office of Faculty Affairs). This normally dictates a deadline for promotion recommendations to reach Office of Research on a date in the preceding November.<\/li>\n<li>Office of Research sends an announcement each year stating the exact deadline date and any specific instructions.
