These fellowships are awarded yearly to researchers in recognition of distinguished performance and a unique potential to make substantial contributions to their field. Winners represent the best young scholars across eight fields: chemistry, computational and evolutionary molecular biology, computer science, economics, mathematics, neuroscience, ocean sciences, and physics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These two-year, $75,000 fellowships are awarded yearly to 126 researchers in recognition of distinguished performance and a unique potential to make substantial contributions to their field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please read the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sloan.org\/fellowships\">full program announcement<\/a>&nbsp;before preparing your internal application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Award Amount<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>$75,000<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Fellowships are for a two-year term, beginning on September 15<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;of the award year.<\/li><li>Fellowships are paid in a single lump sum.<\/li><li>The Fellowship amount is $75,000.<\/li><li>Fellowship funds may be used by the fellow for any expense judged supportive of the fellow\u2019s research including staffing, professional travel, lab expenses, equipment, or summer salary support.<\/li><li>Fellowship funds may not be used for indirect costs or overhead charges.<\/li><li>Fellows are obligated to notify the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation if they are changing institutions.<\/li><li>Once per year, Fellows (or their institution) are obligated to submit both a substantive report (detailing what is being done) and a financial report (detailing how much money has been spent and on what).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Eligibility<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Candidates must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in chemistry, computer science, economics, mathematics, molecular biology, neuroscience, ocean sciences, physics, or a related field.<\/li><li>Candidates must be members of the faculty of a college, university, or other degree-granting institution in the U.S. or Canada.<\/li><li>Candidates must be tenure-track, though untenured, as of September 15, 2020<\/li><li>Candidate\u2019s faculty position must carry a regular teaching obligation.<\/li><li>The Sloan Research Fellowship Program recognizes and rewards outstanding early-career faculty who have the potential to revolutionize their fields of study.<\/li><li>The Sloan Research Fellowship Program recognizes and rewards outstanding early-career faculty who have the potential to revolutionize their fields of study.&nbsp;Successful candidates for a Fellowship generally have a strong record of significant independent research accomplishments that demonstrate creativity and the potential to become future leaders in the scientific community. Nominated candidates are normally several years past the completion of their Ph.D. in order to accumulate a competitive record of independent, significant research.<\/li><li>In keeping with the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation&#8217;s longstanding support of underrepresented minorities in the sciences, the Foundation strongly encourages the nomination of qualified women and minority candidates.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Eligible Fields<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li>Chemistry<\/li><li>Computational &amp; evolutionary molecular biology<\/li><li>Computer science<\/li><li>Economics<\/li><li>Mathematics<\/li><li>Neuroscience<\/li><li>Ocean sciences<\/li><li>Physics<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Selection Criteria<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Fellows are selected on the basis of their independent research accomplishments, creativity, and potential to become leaders in the scientific community through their contributions to their field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Limitation Details<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation restricts the number of institutional nominations to&nbsp;<strong>three per department<\/strong>. In addition,&nbsp;<strong>no more than three faculty members can be nominated to any one of the eight award categories<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are interested in submitting for this program, you must first submit an internal application to&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:limsub@uga.edu\">limsub@uga.edu<\/a>according to the required instructions below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Internal Applications must include the following<\/strong>:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A cover page listing<ul><li>The name of this funding opportunity<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Candidate name, position, department, email, and UGA contact information<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Nominator name, position, department, email, and UGA contact information<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>The award category for which the candidate is competing (<strong>Chemistry<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Computational and Evolutionary Molecular Biology<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Computer Science<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Economics<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Mathematics<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Neuroscience<\/strong>,<strong>Ocean Sciences<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>OR Physics<\/strong>)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>A brief (one-page) statement that describes the candidate\u2019s significant scientific work and immediate research plans.<\/li><li>A letter of nomination from a department head or senior researcher that describes the candidate\u2019s qualifications, initiative, and research.<\/li><li>One paragraph written by the candidate stating why they would be the most competitive for this particular program.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Curriculum vitae.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Internal Selection<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Limited Submission announcements often generate multiple competing proposals.&nbsp;
