The Office of Research announces the FY 2025 cycle for the Faculty Seed Grants in the Sciences and Engineering.

The goal of the Faculty Seed Grants in the Sciences and Engineering is to enable faculty to launch new, promising lines of research for which resources are currently not available. These seed grants are intended to fund pilot research generating preliminary data that will be leveraged to compete for externally funded grant/contract opportunities and contribute to a sustainable program of research and scholarship. Basic and applied research in the social, life, physical sciences, and engineering are eligible for funding through this program. (Note: The Office of Research funds research grants in Humanities and Arts through a separate program managed by the Willson Center).

All faculty (tenure-track and non-tenure track) with research EFT (equivalent full-time) are eligible with the following exceptions: 1) Applicants may not have access to more than $25,000 in institutional or discretionary research funding (e.g., start-up, salary returns, or IDC returns) during the award year (i.e., FY25); 2) Tenured applicants may not have received more than $50,000 in institutional research support in the past three years (FY22 or later). Examples of institutional research support include bridge funding, a Presidential Seed Grant or other internal seed grant; and 3) An applicant may not have received a Faculty Seed Grant from this program within the last three years (an FY22 grant or later).

The deadline for proposal submission is Friday, March 1, 2024.

Grants for successful applications will be awarded with a start date of July 1, 2024 (FY25).

The deadline for receipt of Research Scientist promotion dossiers to Office of Research is Friday, November 3, 2023. Please be sure that all faculty and staff in your unit are aware of this deadline.

(Note: Check with your unit and Dean’s Office for any internal procedures and earlier deadlines.)

The items listed below are required for the promotion dossier. Please see the Guidelines for Appointment and Promotion of Research Scientists for promotion procedures and details regarding these required items, particularly for section 5 (Promotion Procedures), Appendix B (Dossier for Promotion), and Appendix C (Suggested Letter of Request). 

Please make sure you are using the most recent guidelines, which state “Effective 8-1-2023” at the top heading.  These guidelines now clarify how to include references to Student Success Activities, as appropriate.  Faculty may identify Student Success Activities for any, but not necessarily all, of the years relevant to the review (i.e., since appointment or promotion to the current rank), and in any, but not necessarily all, of the areas of assigned effort (teaching, research, scholarship, and other creative activities; and/or service, including administration).

Items required for promotion dossier:

  1. UGA Recommendation for Promotion Form for Academic Professional, Lecturer, Librarian, Public Service and Research Scientist Ranks (with original signatures).
    1. This required form is on the Office of Faculty Affairs website at http://provost.uga.edu/documents/promoform_NTT.pdf.  Failure to use this form will result in the dossier being returned to the unit without further consideration.  
    2. Include the candidate’s full name and full home department name. Submit the original form with signatures, votes, and approval status (yes/no) for each level of review. Ensure that all units use the promotion form revised on 3/30/2016. 
    3. IMPORTANT-Years in Rank Calculation: Please ensure your unit(s) use the 2023-2024 Quick Reference Guide when completing the form to calculate years in rank for all promotion candidates.

The Office of Research encourages the nominations of deserving scholars for the 2020-2021 UGA Research Awards.

In light of the unique demands on faculty and departmental administrators this fall semester, Office of Research has extended the deadline for submission of nominations beyond the original date of November 1, 2020.  The new deadline is January 25, 2021, consistent with the deadlines for awards from the provost’s office.  We hope that this additional time allows all deserving faculty, postdocs and graduate students the opportunity to be nominated.

This extension applies to the following research awards:

  • Faculty Research Awards:
    • Early Career Scholar Awards,
    • Creative Research Medals,
    • Creative Research Awards,
    • Distinguished Research Professorships
  • Postdoctoral Research Awards (postdocs) and
  • Robert C. Anderson Memorial Award (recent graduate students)

Faculty Research Award nominations are processed through Deans’ offices; please check with your Dean’s office for internal college procedures and deadline.  

The Postdoctoral Research Award nominations must initiate from the faculty mentor/supervisor of the postdoc and include a cover letter from the department head, dean or center/institute director supporting the nomination.  The Robert C. Anderson Memorial Award nominations are made by the nominee’s major professor and department head.

Effective Dec. 16, 2018, all postdoctoral positions will be processed and managed through UGAJobs via the “Grad/Research/Student/Temp” position type and OneUSG Connect. Office of Postdoctoral Affairs must review and approve all postdoctoral positions, postings (both direct hires and searches) and hiring proposals within UGAJobs as the Sponsored Office. 

For OPA requirements for postdoctoral positions and appointments, please consult the updated Policy for Postdoctoral Appointments (document should read “Revised December 2018”).   For instructional resources or technical assistance regarding UGAJobs or OneUSG Connect, please consult the Training Library or contact the appropriate section of the OneSource Service Desk.

Please note: As a part of the university transition to OneUSG Connect HCM, the University of Georgia will adopt the USG Job Categories (B-CATS) as its new Job Code structure. Use of the USG Job Categories will allow the ability to report at a system level consistent with all other USG institutions.

The requirements of the Visiting Researcher/Scholar (VRS) policies and procedures help to ensure that mid- to long-term visitors have access to necessary UGA resources, as well as identification through a UGAID and appropriate “standing” at UGA.  Effective May 1, 2014, the visiting researcher/scholar hosting and onboarding procedures detailed on this webpage are required to host a visitor on the UGA campus.

These procedures have been updated effective March 15, 2017.  The VRS Questionnaire and VRS webpage will be updated with these new changes on March 15, 2017.  https://research.uga.edu/visiting/procedures/

The changes are summarized below.

1) If a visitor requires a background investigation (US or Canadian citizens), this paperwork must be completed before the official VRS process is initiated. Approval derived from a completed background investigation (or wavier from HR) must be submitted with the VRS questionnaire.

2) All visitors will now be required to sign an agreement. These agreements protect our faculty, other employees working with the visitor, and the work being done while the visitor is at UGA.  A signed agreement must be uploaded to the questionnaire prior to submission.

  • If your visitor is attending or working at a university, or working in any other entity, an agreement that requires both the visitor’s and the employer’s signatures should be used.
  • If your visitor is not employed or enrolled in/associated with any institution or company, an employer signature is not required.  Therefore, an agreement signed solely by the visitor is appropriate.
  • If the proposed work involves an Intellectual Property issue that is not covered by the standard agreement, then the department should discuss this with UGA’s Innovation Gateway (Cheryl Junker, junkercl@uga.edu) and establish the relevant IP agreement before the VRS questionnaire is submitted.

The University of Georgia and the Minas Gerais State Research Foundation have launched a new partnership to support international research collaboration with grant awards up to $15,000 to tackle issues — such as Zika and other infectious diseases — important to both Georgia and Minas Gerais, a large state located in southeastern Brazil.

The grant program was announced this week in Tiradentes, Minas Gerais, where 12 UGA faculty joined their Brazilian counterparts from the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, the Federal University of Minas Gerais, and the Federal University of Viçosa for a workshop focused on creating new joint research initiatives in human and animal health, bioinformatics and genomics. UGA faculty need not have attended the workshop to participate in the grant program.

“UGA faculty already have important collaborations with colleagues in Brazil and in the State of Minas Gerais, in particular,” said Vice President for Research David Lee. “With this new joint support we hope to deepen and expand our relationships.”

Grant applications are due January 9, 2017, and awards will support preliminary research, partnership development and proposal preparation. To be eligible, proposals must identify and commit to pursue specific sources of external funding as a result of the activities enabled by the program. The program is jointly funded by the Minas Gerais State Research Foundation (whose Portuguese abbreviation is FAPEMIG) and UGA’s Office of Research, in conjunction with UGA academic units.

“Brazil is already home to more of UGA’s international partnerships than any other country in the world. Given our shared areas of research — ranging from biomaterials to infectious diseases to agriculture and bioinformatics — Minas Gerais is an ideal strategic target for collaboration with the University of Georgia,” said Brian Watkins, UGA’s director of international partnerships.

The UGA-FAPEMIG program continues an increasing commitment to international research and service at UGA, following the Global Research Collaboration Grant Program that was launched in April to encourage UGA faculty to pursue externally funded research initiatives abroad.
