With the addition of bees, the college\u2019s residency program has expanded the breadth of its animal training, which is among the nation\u2019s leaders. Guided by <a href=\"https:\/\/vet.uga.edu\/person\/joerg-mayer\/\">Dr. Joerg Mayer<\/a>, students in the bee vet program have the chance to gain clinical training in caring for the pollinators.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Along with the residency program, Mayer has teamed up with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caes.uga.edu\/about\/personnel\/person\/5457\/keith-s-delaplane.html\">Keith Delaplane<\/a>, professor of entomology and director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/bees.caes.uga.edu\/\">UGA Honey Bee Program<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caes.uga.edu\/\">College of Agriculture and Environmental Science<\/a> (CAES), to form a <a href=\"https:\/\/vet.uga.edu\/student-life\/student-clubs-and-organization\/\">Vet Bee Club<\/a>. The club gives students in the College of Veterinary Medicine the opportunity to learn about and engage in apiary medicine through hands-on experience inspecting hives and diagnosing disease like <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_foulbrood\">American Foulbrood<\/a>, a deadly bacterial disease that has forced beekeepers to destroy, burn and bury infected colonies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This disease has brought life to an industry partnership with UGA\u2019s own hive for innovation, entrepreneurship and commercialization. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dalan.com\/\">Dalan Animal Health<\/a> recently relocated to UGA\u2019s Innovation District to partner with both CVM and CAES to test <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/01\/07\/science\/honeybee-vaccine.html\">its landmark honeybee vaccine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] The University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) is committed to keeping honeybees healthy.
