They can get health care-associated infections caused by bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics, and this may occur even when they haven\u2019t been treated with antibiotics.<\/p>\n<p>A new study at UGA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/vet.uga.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">College of Veterinary Medicine<\/a> is exploring how and why this may happen. Led by <a href=\"https:\/\/vet.uga.edu\/person\/foodanimal-people-burgess\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Brandy Burgess<\/a>, principal investigator and associate professor, a team of researchers is using genetic sequencing technology to compare the bacterial communities in fecal samples with the hospital environment, allowing them to see if potentially harmful bacteria and their antibiotic resistance genes are shared between the <a href=\"https:\/\/vet.uga.edu\/hospital-clinic\/hospital\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Veterinary Teaching Hospital<\/a> environment and hospitalized horses.<\/p>\n<p>The study\u2019s results will help guide veterinary policies and practices to keep horses safe.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Horses, like humans, face health risks associated with hospitalization.
