{"id":18590,"date":"2018-10-18T16:06:42","date_gmt":"2018-10-18T20:06:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ugaresearch.uga.edu\/?p=18590"},"modified":"2019-09-17T10:39:40","modified_gmt":"2019-09-17T14:39:40","slug":"learning-the-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/research.uga.edu\/news\/learning-the-business\/","title":{"rendered":"Learning the business"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The fourth floor of Creswell Hall looks pretty much like your typical residence hall, but the students living here are far from typical. They are all entrepreneurs: risk-takers who want to turn their ideas into businesses.<\/p>\n<p>Many of them already have.<\/p>\n<p>Jared Zengo of Oconee County started a business making art installations out of Rubik\u2019s Cubes, and has sold his art to Oriental Trading Company, which is owned by Warren Buffett\u2019s holding company, Berkshire Hathaway.<\/p>\n<p>Hannah Abdulhaqq, a fashion merchandising minor from Douglasville, started a clothing resale business and has a website to sell clothes.<\/p>\n<p>Alex Deltchev, a chemistry major from Oconee County, started a landscaping business in high school. Now, after following an interest in the video editing software Adobe Premiere Pro, he has a business that creates music videos and Snapchat filters.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Creswell Launchpad\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vJMv5Sbx6ug?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>These three first-year students are a part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ugaentr.com\/launch-pad\/\">Launch Pad<\/a>, a new living learning community created to spark innovation. Students applied to live in the Launch Pad this spring after being accepted at UGA, but before starting classes. They had to write a brief essay describing their entrepreneurial goals, and share stories about their own startups, if applicable. The group\u201414 men and 12 women\u2014represents a wide cross section of campus. Many of them are engineering and STEM majors.<\/p>\n<p>Zengo signed up for the program because he was interested in both business and computer science. He\u2019s majoring in computer science, but using the Launch Pad entrepreneurship program to learn about business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI grew up building computers for nonprofits, like Free I.T. Athens. I love entrepreneurship,\u201d Zengo said. \u201cI get that feeling when I think of an idea. Someone\u2019s never done this before. I can make this a real thing. And that gives me a rush to keep on going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Students in the program take a <a href=\"https:\/\/fyo.uga.edu\/BrowseSearchMain.aspx\">First-Year Odyssey Seminar<\/a>, where they learn all about being an entrepreneur, from the initial idea to growing a business. They have keycard access to their own co-working space off the lobby on Creswell Hall, where one of the Odyssey classes meets. The co-working space and maker space is stocked with tables and stools, sofas and ottomans, snacks, a refrigerator and a 3D printer. Launch Pad participants also have other perks including membership in the Four Athens Tech Incubator, membership in the Society of Entrepreneurs and opportunities to meet one-on-one with successful entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEntrepreneurs come and talk about how they started and how they kept on going,\u201d said Zengo. \u201cAnd they each teach a different life lesson. Some of them blew it out of the water instantly, while others didn\u2019t really. They failed, and then they kept on trying to improve. And they ended up succeeding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And rejection is a subject stressed in the seminar taught by Don Chambers or Cali Brutz, lecturers and associate directors of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.terry.uga.edu\/academics\/entrepreneurship\/\">UGA Entrepreneurship Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you\u2019re looking to be an entrepreneur, and start up an idea, it\u2019s hard,\u201d said Chambers to the class. \u201cDon\u2019t be discouraged if we push on you. Don\u2019t take it as \u2018that\u2019s a stupid idea\u2019; that\u2019s not the case at all. It\u2019s hard. If it were easy, none of us would be in college. We\u2019d all be zillionaires coming up with ideas. So keep trying. If the first idea, the second idea, doesn\u2019t work, that\u2019s fine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For a class for freshmen who are only a few weeks into the semester, the class is fast paced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy are ideas no good?\u201d Chambers asked the class.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause they\u2019re just ideas,\u201d said Haylee Peters, an international business management major from Monroe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause they\u2019re based on your world, your experience,\u201d Chambers explained. \u201cHow many other people have the same problem? Maybe two. Is there 200? Is there 2,000? If you can find 10 people, you can find 20; if you find 100, you can find 200. If you can\u2019t find 10, you can\u2019t find 20. And you don\u2019t have a business. Try to prove yourself wrong. Most of your ideas won\u2019t pan out. If you can\u2019t prove yourself wrong, then maybe you really are on to something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After a discussion on customer discovery, the class breaks into groups to come up with open- ended questions to ask potential customers. They\u2019re all working on different group projects\u2014building apps, websites, doing marketing for a neck pillow\u2014to work through what it takes to start your own business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo far the coolest thing I\u2019ve learned I think is just how much goes into building a business,\u201d said Peters. \u201cBecause I\u2019ve been working for Chick-fil-A, I\u2019ve been learning about businesses that are already established. It\u2019s been nice to learn about how ideas turn into businesses and how much it takes\u2014how many different types of people are needed to even start thinking about a potential business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Peters also likes the camaraderie of the Launch Pad community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI immediately had 25 friends. We hang out all the time,\u201d she said. \u201cI get to hear their ideas and give my input. They\u2019re all pretty honest about my ideas and what they think I could improve on, and it\u2019s been nice to just be able to interact with these people that have different interest in different majors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Abdulhaqq said the program is a small, tight-knit community. \u201cI don\u2019t have that many freshman classes, because I came in with 50 credit hours and am in a lot of junior level classes,\u201d she said. \u201cHaving the other freshmen I can relate to is really helpful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But mostly the program has reinforced her entrepreneurial spirit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis had made me realize that I can do bigger things than just reselling clothing,\u201d she said. \u201cI could have a corporation and run it right now and start it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In fact, Ethan Boos and Charley Sun from the program are currently working their first business possibility through the eight-week-long UGA Idea Accelerator.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ba0c2f;\">Innovation at UGA<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The Launch Pad program is one of many initiatives UGA is taking to elevate entrepreneurship at UGA. Housed in the Terry College of Business, the UGA Entrepreneurship Program includes an undergraduate Certificate in Entrepreneurship\u2014which is open to all UGA undergraduate students interested in working for a startup or nonprofit, or pursuing investment banking and angel funding; and a Graduate Certificate in Entrepreneurship, open to all UGA graduate students who want to develop an idea into a successful venture, build an effective team and secure funding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Entrepreneurship Program at UGA has been designed to be very hands-on,\u201d said Bob Pinckney, director of entrepreneurship at UGA. \u201cEntrepreneurship can be described as a contact sport\u2014you have to be in it to truly learn how to be successful at starting and running your own business. We work hard to provide opportunities for students to learn and experience entrepreneurship through doing. From the Harvard case studies and speakers in the classroom to the Accelerators, Pitch contests, and Georgia Kickstart Fund, UGA is building one of the top entrepreneurship programs in the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>UGA entrepreneurship opportunities in addition to the Launch Pad include UGA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.terry.uga.edu\/events\/next-top-entrepreneur\">Next Top Entrepreneur<\/a> competition, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.terry.uga.edu\/events\/next-great-consumer-brands\">Collegiate Consensus Great Brands Competition<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.terry.uga.edu\/academics\/entrepreneurship\/experiential\">UGA Idea Accelerator Program<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.terry.uga.edu\/academics\/entrepreneurship\/experiential#kickstart\">UGA Kickstart Fund<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ugaentr.com\/summer-launch-program\">UGA Summer Launch Program<\/a>, participation in the new Student Startup Incubator and membership in the Society of Entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n<p>The program will grow from this inaugural class of 26 with room for around 50 students in the next cohort.
