Inmates at eight prisons, like Dooly State Prison in Unadilla (above), learn to tend bees and collect honey\u2014and they become ambassadors for the threatened insects. \u201cThey become extremely compassionate and protective of these bees and these colonies,\u201d says Jennifer Berry, manager for the Honey Bee Lab. \u201cThat is really important\u2014they love something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>This brief appeared in the spring 2019 issue of \u00a0<\/em>Research Magazine<em>.
