{"id":50,"date":"2014-06-12T18:32:30","date_gmt":"2014-06-12T18:32:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/research.uga.edu\/compliance-training\/?page_id=50"},"modified":"2025-12-11T21:24:08","modified_gmt":"2025-12-11T21:24:08","slug":"biosafety-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/research.uga.edu\/integrity-support\/biosafety-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Biosafety Training"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\">[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]\n<blockquote><p>The University of Georgia considers the security of UGA personnel, students,\u00a0 visitors and the general community to be of the utmost importance and safety a critical component of good research practices.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Office of Biosafety endeavors to provide this care through the appropriate training of personnel and students in order to meet this University\u2019s commitment and to comply with local, state and federal regulations.<\/p>\n<h3>Mandatory Training<\/h3>\n<p>To provide the highest quality of protection, the following mandatory courses\/forms are required for those working in the following areas:<\/p>\n<p><b>Any biohazard:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Principal Investigator must complete training and document with form <a href=\"https:\/\/app.smartsheet.com\/b\/form\/6c38bdd218e7492986441663e84d1a7c\">Proficiency in Standard and Special Microbiological Practices<\/a>\u00a0for each individual working within the laboratory.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Blood, body fluids, tissues or human cell lines or other potentially infectious materials:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pep.uga.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Online Training<\/a>: All lab personnel working with the above materials are required to complete bloodborne pathogens training once per year. This training is available on <a href=\"https:\/\/pep.uga.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PEP<\/a> and is titled &#8220;UGA Right to Know: Bloodborne Pathogen Training.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>BSL3 or Select Agents:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Agent-specific training as determined by UGA\u2019s Responsible Official. Contact Patrick Stockton\u00a0at\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:pstock@uga.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pstock@uga.edu<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Recommended Training<\/h3>\n<p><b>BSL1\/BSL2:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;Biosafety Basics for the Laboratory\u201d \u2013 This in-person training is intended for both new and experienced individuals working in a BSL-1 or BSL-2 laboratory. \u00a0It is highly recommended that all persons receive this training prior to beginning work in the laboratory.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0BSL-1 and BSL-2 online training:\u00a0These courses are available through the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pep.uga.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Professional Education Portal (PEP)<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/research.uga.edu\/docs\/policies\/compliance\/biosafety\/UGA-NIH-Guidelines-PIs.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NIH Recombinant Guidelines Training for Researchers<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Biosafety in Microbiology Teaching Labs<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This course provides fundamental information for those students working or learning in microbiology teaching laboratories.\u00a0 The course will be assigned by your instructor and they will provide access information if you must complete this training.\u00a0 Once assigned, this training is available on your Student e-Learning Commons (eLC) account.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>\u00a0Additional Opportunities<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Laboratory Operations Reviews and assistance with Waste Solution Assessments, free-of-charge<\/li>\n<li>Animal Biosafety Training Program and Certification provided by the AALAS Learning Library, in coordination with the American Biological Safety Association (ABSA), the Elizabeth R.
