October 2015 Innovation Gateway Highlights

  • Innovation Gateway attended the UGA Ornamental Horticulture Research Field Day at the Durham Horticulture Farm. Horticulture faculty updated industry representatives, master gardeners, public officials, and others about research projects to address some of the needs and challenges of one of Georgia’s leading agriculture sectors.
  • Innovation Gateway and PhytoSynthetix, a UGA startup, have entered into an intellectual property agreement on work conducted by Marc Van Iersel, department of horticulture, related to accelerated growth and development of plants under certain lighting conditions and uses.
  • Innovation Gateway executed an exclusive license agreement for a new wheat cultivar developed by Jerry Johnson, department of crop and soil sciences.
  • Innovation Gateway was mentioned in a Georgia Trend story discussing the growing bioscience industry in Georgia.
  • Innovation Gateway and Scott NeSmith, department of horticulture, hosted a visitor from Peru who is interested in evaluating blueberries in that country for possible commercialization.
  • Innovation Gateway attended the Urban Ag Council’s Sod & Turf Producers Field Day in Ft. Valley, GA.
  • Innovation Gateway executed an exclusive license agreement for a new ornamental Vitex cultivar developed by Carol Robacker, department of horticulture.
  • Representatives from an international pharmaceutical company were on campus this month to meet with the Innovation Gateway and Vasu Nair, director of the UGA Center for Drug Discovery, to explore a collaboration focused on developing treatments for certain chronic diseases.
  • Innovation Gateway hosted a delegation from the Shanghai Administrative Institute (SHAI), who were participating in a technology innovation training program coordinated through the UGA Carl Vinson Institute of Government.
  • Innovation Gateway Startup Stories in October featured Pathens, which was founded by UGA researchers Fred Quinn and Russell Karls, department of infectious diseases, College of Veterinary Medicine. The company’s research is focused on a cure for tuberculosis.
  • Innovation Gateway was represented at the UGA Plant Center Annual Fall Retreat in Helen, Georgia.
  • Innovation Gateway hosted the inaugural meeting of its Board of Advisors at the Georgia Center. The Board will assist Innovation Gateway with policy development and provide startup company guidance.
  • An Innovation Gateway team member traveled to Oregon to visit with multiple nurseries that are licensees of UGA-developed plant cultivars including blueberries, hydrangeas, holly, and other ornamental shrubs and trees.
