September 2016 Innovation Gateway Highlights

UGA ranked among top 100 universities worldwide for U.S. patents

The University of Georgia is ranked among the top 100 universities worldwide for the number of U.S. utility patents granted in 2015, according to a recent list released by the National Academy of Inventors and the Intellectual Property Owners Association.

August 2016 Innovation Gateway Highlights

Three new staff recently joined Innovation Gateway. Senior Associate Director of Startups Ian Biggs will focus on strengthening UGA’s startup program by improving startup scalability, increasing the number and quality of fundable ventures, enhancing education and mentoring, and improving the overall speed and efficiency of the UGA startup process.

August 2016 Spotlighted Inventor – Scott Merkle

Scott A. Merkle, professor of forest biotechnology and associate dean for research at the UGA Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, has dedicated more than two decades to researching chestnut trees, and is currently working to develop blight-resistant American Chestnut trees.

DOE Request for Technologies and Research Outcomes

July 2016 Spotlighted Entrepreneur – Erico Mattos

Erico Mattos, a University of Georgia alumnus and co-founder of the horticultural and precision agriculture company PhytoSynthetix, was selected to attend the 2016 Global Entrepreneurship Summit at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. The three-day meeting began June 22 with a morning address by President Barack Obama, who announced the first summit in 2010.

July 2016 Innovation Gateway Highlights

Innovation Gateway and Kerafast entered into a new license agreement involving 20 monoclonal antibodies for use as plant science research tools. To date, nearly 400 UGA research tools have been licensed to partners with global distribution capabilities.

Innovation Gateway staff surprised John Ingle, former associate vice-president for research at UGA, with a collective “thank you” and provided him with a token of their appreciation – engraved marble bookends – at an event celebrating his retirement in June. The University of Georgia and the state of Georgia continue to benefit from his contributions to the UGA Research Foundation over the last 27 years.

Mark Jackwood, recipient of the Inventor of the Year Award, and Valentine Nzengung, recipient of the Academic Entrepreneur of the Year Award, were each recognized at the 37th Annual Research Awards Banquet sponsored by the University of Georgia Research Foundation.

Company with UGA roots selected by AT&T for Accelerator Program

Cogent Education, an Athens education software company that began at the University of Georgia and graduated from its startup incubator, is one of six innovative ed-tech startups from around the country named to the 2016 AT&T Aspire Accelerator class, a program to support student success and career readiness through accelerating education technology.

Research + real world: Finding partners through discovery and innovation

Industry increasingly is turning to universities to know what’s going on at the cutting edge of research, and universities, in turn, are looking to industry to take its innovations to market and deliver benefits to society. A significant step was taken this February, when Crystal Leach joined UGA as the founding director of Discovery and Innovation Partnerships, a new initiative jointly supported by the Office of the Vice President for Research and the College of Engineering.
