April 2017 Innovation Gateway Highlights

The University of Georgia recognized excellence in UGA research and scholarly activities in April at the 38th Annual Research Awards banquet. Richard Meagher, Distinguished Research Professor of Genetics in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, received the 2017 Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Biao He, Georgia Research Alliance Distinguished Investigator and Fred C. Davison Distinguished University Chair in Veterinary Medicine, received the 2017 Inventor of the Year Award.

  • Innovation Gateway executed an option with a new UGA start-up company for a cancer-related discovery.
  • Innovation Gateway executed 11 license agreements for peanut varieties developed by Bill Branch, crop and soil science department, or Peggy Ozias-Akins, department of horticulture, in collaboration with Corley Holbrook, USDA.
  • UGA’s partnership with the Georgia Research Alliance (GRA) and how the university’s 17 GRA Eminent Scholars foster innovation and economic development was featured on UGA’s home page.
  • Clint Waltz, department of crop and soil sciences, received the Turfgrass Educator Award of Excellence from Turfgrass Producers International. This award recognizes contributions that help promote the benefits of turfgrass.
  • Innovation Gateway Assistant Director Brent Marable, was the keynote speaker for the UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Student Awards & Leadership Banquet.
  • Erico Mattos, co-founder and CTO of UGA startup company PhytoSynthetix, discussed his company’s innovative plant-controlled lighting technology at the monthly Innovation Gateway Startup Stories seminar series.
  • Innovation Gateway teamed up with Georgia Bio, Athens-Clarke County Economic Development, and Smith Tempel to host a life sciences networking event featuring presentations by David Blum, department of biochemistry and molecular biology, and Joy Doran-Peterson, department of microbiology.
  • Innovation Gateway hosted a Lunch and Learn session with Charlie Craig, co-founder of the life sciences public and investor relations consultancy firm Opus Biotech Communications. Craig discussed the importance of messaging within the life sciences industry.
  • An Innovation Gateway staff member gave a presentation to the Athens Rotary Club on UGA innovation and entrepreneurship.
  • The Athens Banner-Herald reported that UGA is one of the country’s top universities in research licensing income.
