FAQs for Safe Secure Science

Yes!  Because we cannot determine who works in a laboratory and who doesn’t, we need all faculty and staff at UGA to complete the mandatory qualifier quiz to determine if you need to take the Laboratory Safety Basics course. This is a short 1-question quiz and it should only take a couple of minutes for you to complete.

You can login with your UGA MyID and Password.

No.  You will only need to take this course once.  Each semester, we will filter out all students that have previously completed this training.  You will be notified if we determine that a Refresher course is needed.

Yes, because this course is used in some classrooms to generate educational grades, it is covered by FERPA.  Therefore, all requests for student educational records information will be handled in compliance with these regulations.

Failure to comply with this training is a violation of UGA Policy.  Additionally, it can impact the award of grants or contracts since you must specify compliance with this requirement on your transmittal form.  It may negatively impact your approval of a chemical specific hygiene plan for your laboratory and could result in negative findings on your Research Safety Laboratory Inspection.  Additional consequences will be handled inter-departmentally.

For laboratorians, this training should be completed before you enter any laboratory space at UGA.  For others that will likely opt out of the training, you must complete the Qualifier Quiz within the first 60 days of employment.

There are certainly situations in which a manager may want to see the training completion of his or her direct reports.  Additionally, an Investigator may want to see the training completion of those individuals listed on their grant or contract.  Unfortunately, there is no easy way to obtain this information using our current system.  It would be best to inquire directly with each individual.  Deficiencies will be relayed by any oversight group, such as the Office of Sponsored Projects.

You must contact UGA ID Management to obtain a visitors MyID and Password.  You should also register with the Visiting Scholars Program.  You can begin this process by having your Faculty Sponsor complete the VRS Questionnaire  Once you have these credentials, you will see the training in your eLC account.
